While you can get used to it, it does take time and isn’t as smooth or good as the fire flower in Mario.Īnd yes, you even collect coins much like in Super Mario Bros. In this version (unlike the newer ones) Tux’s spit power often bounces over adversaries instead of having a more direct shot like Mario. There is also a fire flower, which gives Tux the ability to spit. Including snowballs which make Tux larger and act as the mushroom in Super Mario Bros.

Other than that fans of the Super Mario series of games will find a lot of similarities. You are unable to go back to previous points in the level. In other words if you hit a snowball to grow bigger, and it scrolls to the left of the screen, if you do not get it, it is gone for good.
The second issue that I have with it, is that in a level there is no back tracking. The scroll is long, and it takes forever with no option to skip. My first complaint is when you first boot up the game and begin playing – the slow scrolling text describing the story and how Tux’s bae (I hate myself for using that word) Penny has been kidnapped. No button programming, it just works, and to make matters even better the controls follow Super Mario World, on the SNES.Īs this is an older version of the game there are some features missing that are available in the newer versions.
This is an older version of the game, and is listed as EXPERIMENTAL, however after installing it, and playing it for a few hours total over the last week I’ve had no issues with it.Īs a lazy individual (which is why I spend so much time hacking shit trust me its not for education just to feed and further my lazy-ness), I love the fact that it works “out of the box” with the controller. Before this I played Super Tux Kart, and Tux Racer, but was happy to find a side-scrolling platformer – my favorite type of game.
I first discovered this game in 2005, when I was digging through the Synaptic Package Manager on Fedora Core 3, and installed it on a whim. The difference instead of playing as an overweight Italian plumber, you are playing as an overweight…penguin…probably from Antartica. SuperTux is an action/platformer game in the same vein as Super Mario World, or Super Mario Bros.
